On April 24, the Chinese Association for International Understanding (CAFIU) and Japan-China Economic Association Beijing Office jointly held the Second Seminar on Japanese Economic Outlook and China-Japan Economic Relations at Wanshou Hotel in Beijing. In his address, Secretary-General Ni Jian pointed out that advancing exchanges and mutual understanding serves as the foundation for maintaining and strengthening people-to-people relations between the two nations. He said that this seminar aims at deepening China’s insight into the outlook and future development of Japan’s economy so as to play a positive role in pushing forward the economic cooperation between the two countries. Kiyoyuki Seguchi gave a briefing on the current situation and prospects of future development for Japan’s economy and also talked about his view on China’s economy. He said that the Chinese market means a lot for Japan’s economy. By the year 2020, China’s GDP would have tripled that of Japan, which would provide huge prospects for the future development of Japan’s economy. The continuing surge in Chinese tourists visiting Japan is a boon to the department stores, household appliance manufacturers and hotels of his country and a lot of Japanese companies have become more positive in investing in China. He believes that Japan should join the AIIB as soon as possible, which would not only benefit Japan’s economic development, but also enable it to help improve the operation and management of the bank by applying its experience in the management of multilateral financial institutions. In the end, he said that Japan should use its own strength to promote the development of Asian economic circle with East Asia at its core and advance regional peace by virtue of its soft power so as to make its due contribution to the peace and economic development of the world. To achieve this goal, it is necessary for Japan to adjust its domestic policies accordingly.
Kiyoyuki Seguchi and the attendees had active interactions on the economic outlooks of both countries and how to strengthen bilateral economic exchanges. The Chinese attendees believed the well-structured and persuasive presentation helped deepen their insight into Japan’s economy and China-Japan economic cooperation.
